Advances in digital technology are considered crucial to ensuring the continued productivity of Brazilian agriculture, in terms of both economic viability and environmental sustainability.
The involvement of small and medium-sized rural producers in this process of transformation in the countryside is essential. Embrapa, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock and the São Paulo Research Foundation (Fapesp), has launched the Science Center for Development in Digital Agriculture (CCD-AD/Semear Digital).
The Science Centers for Development (CCDs) funded by Fapesp are involved in internationally competitive research projects, which will be carried out by teams of researchers from institutes, universities, or higher education institutions, in partnership with government agencies, companies, and non-governmental organizations.
This initiative aims to maximise social and economic impact of research focused on specific societal problems.
In this context, the Semear Digital project has been developed, with the aim of increasing the productivity and competitiveness of small and medium-sized rural producers through digital agriculture.
Following the approval of the project at the end of 2022, we began to take shape. Our current structure is robust and our numbers impressive.

A fundamental part of our actions takes place in the Agrotechnological Districts (DATs). The ten DATs, which are spread across different regions of Brazil allow us to understand the needs of these producers and, thus, develop and adapt technological solutions ranging from improving connectivity in rural areas to applying digital technologies in agricultural production processes. These solutions can involve applications in artificial intelligence and remote sensing, automation and precision agriculture, traceability, and certification.
Our purpose is to advance knowledge and generate solutions that meet the needs of small and medium-sized rural producers. This will contribute to reducing market imperfections and inequalities in the adoption of digital technologies. These are capable of promoting gains in productivity and competitiveness, reducing costs, and increasing the efficiency of agricultural production.
Embrapa Digital Agriculture is the host institution for Semear Digital, whose associated institutions include the Telecommunications Research and Development Center (CPQD), the Luiz de Queiroz School of Agriculture at the University of São Paulo (Esalq/USP), the Agronomic Institute (IAC), the Institute of Agricultural Economics (IEA), the National Telecommunications Institute (Inatel), and the Federal University of Lavras (UFLA).
Semear Digital is funded by the São Paulo Research Foundation (Fapesp) and has also received funding from the Brazilian Internet Steering Committee (CGI.br).
